Phonics & Spelling

At Hady we know the important role phonics plays in ensuring children can read independently with fluency and understanding.

The teaching of phonics is an integral part of the curriculum in both the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 classrooms. Children receive daily phonics input in a discreet session with the aim of children quickly learning grapheme-phoneme correspondence, which enables them to read with increased automaticity as more GPCs are learned and embedded. In Key Stage 2, Phonics continues to be taught as a drive to improve spellings and increase phonological awareness. We aim for all children to pass the Key Stage 1 phonics screening check and for all children to apply the principles of phonics in their reading and writing as they progress throughout school.

We ensure that our year group teaching of phonics is rigorous, structured and enjoyable.

We know reading for pleasure is a more powerful factor in life achievement than socio-economic background.


To this end our children’s phonics learning is multisensory, engaging and fun.  It includes the use of interactive whiteboards, magnetic letters, speaking and listening, songs, rhymes and practical games and activities. Children work with pace and are encouraged to apply their knowledge across the curriculum with any reading or writing activities.
